What to Expect When Working with an Instructional Designer Technologist

When you partner with an IDT on a project, you can expect a structured, collaborative process to deliver high-quality learning solutions. Here’s an overview of what the experience typically involves:

Initial Consultation & Needs Assessment

The IDT will meet with you and key stakeholders to clarify project goals, identify skill gaps, and define the learning audience. This will ensure that the training solution aligns with your organization’s objectives and addresses real needs.

You’ll outline the project’s scope, timeline, deliverables, and budget. Based on your requirements and organizational environment, the IDT will recommend a project management approach (agile or step-by-step).

The IDT will map out learning objectives, structure content, and select engaging instructional strategies. You’ll review storyboards and prototypes to visualize the final product and provide feedback before full development begins.

The course or training materials are built, often in phases. Interactive elements, assessments, and multimedia are integrated. You’ll participate in review cycles to ensure the product meets your expectations.

The finished product is launched, and the IDT will help with rollout, user support, and troubleshooting. Multiple rounds of review and quality assurance checks ensure everything functions as intended.

The IDT will gather feedback, assess learning outcomes, and recommend future improvements. The project documentation will be finalized and archived for future reference.

Expect regular updates, clear communication, and a focus on keeping the project on track regarding scope, schedule, and budget. The IDT coordinates with other specialists (e.g., SMEs, graphic designers, developers) as needed.

ADDIE: A linear process( Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate) for projects with well-defined requirements.

SAM: An agile, iterative approach (Successive Approximation Model) ideal for rapid prototyping and frequent feedback.
